Microsoft Corporation has jumped on the Social Media bandwagon with www.so.cl, the tech giant’s new social networking site. The site had a sneaky launch under the din of the Facebook IPO sees itself taking on the current reigning champion Facebook and Google+.
“[This]…is an experimental research project, developed by Microsoft’s FUSE Labs, focused on exploring the possibilities of social search for the purpose of learning.”
A Microsoft spokesperson explained to Forbes Magazine, down playing speculation that the site will compete directly with the $100 Billion Facebook. However, it should be noted that Facebook too had its humble beginnings catering to Harvard students.
You can register with the site using your Facebook login or Windows Live account.
The site offers users the ability to create a collage of web content, with its interface designed to browse large mash-ups of content. Microsoft hopes the network will be popular with students who need to collaborate on research projects. Microsoft has partnered with schools (including the University of Washington, Syracuse University, and New York University) to emphasize the networks academic focus, but anybody can register with the website.
